Happy Halloween everyone! It’s that time of year where creativity takes over and we celebrate the occasion by dressing as phantom ghouls, blood thirsty vampires, wicked witches and of course the time to indulge in ‘trick or treating’.
I just LOVE this time of year so much is happening and lots of celebrations are going on. Furthermore, it’s the perfect excuse for me to get in the kitchen and get creative with the Halloween treats. This year was certainly no exception. We have been making all sorts of tempting treats and frightful food! However, this year I thought I’d try making a healthier treat too. Just because it’s Halloween it doesn’t mean that all treats need to be sinful.
So why not try these, chocolate dipped raw fruit bars decorated with chocolate paint and sugar eyes to look like mummies! These are the ideal treat as they are still deliciously sweet but without tonnes of refined sugar-laden calories, plus they are super quick to make and great for getting the kids involved. Win win!
I took a short-cut with this recipe and used pre-bought raw fruit bars. Of course you can make your own (very easy to do so) but if like me you don’t have too much time on your hands before the ‘Trick or Treaters’ come knocking, then this is perfect. My personal favourite bars to use are a combination of Nakd breakfast bars, and Tesco’s own raw fruit bars.
The Nakd range has a huge variety of flavours. In the breakfast bar range in particular, I love the banana bread ones, a simple combination of bananas, nutmeg, cinnamon and walnuts and that’s it nothing else and nothing artificial. My other favourite is their apple Danish bar, they taste just like the classic Danish pastry without all the butter. Again, 100% natural ingredients and gluten free; dates, gluten-free oats, raisins, Fruit extract (apple, carob,) cashews, apple, cinnamon & nutmeg. Perfect! Check out their full range here, I’d love to try the orange and cacao one!
If you’d like your treat to pack a punch of fruitiness, then definitely try the Tesco range. I found these to be a little more zingy, great for cutting through the chocolate coating. I used the strawberry and banana. Again, what I love about these bars is that they are 100% natural ingredients; date, strawberry, dried banana, dried apple.
So once you have your desired fruit and nut bars simply chop them in half so you have two rectangle pieces. Insert a cocktail tick or canape skewer into the bottom of the bar. Once your chocolate of choice has melted, simply dunk in your fruit bar and make sure all of the bar is covered with the chocolate. You may need to give this a few coats to get the desired coverage. Allow chocolate to set in the fridge and then begin decorating.
For the decoration I used sugar eyes and melted chocolate squiggled all over the bar to give that bandaged ‘mummy’ look. Again, allow the decoration to set and then tuck in. I can assure you these will be a hit with kids and the grown ups. A definite treat of Halloween.
Can these be made gluten free?
Of course, just ensure you use gluten free fruit bars and ensure the chocolate is pure and does not contain any gluten?
Can these be made in advance
Absolutely! These can be made ahead of time and kept in the refrigerator until treat time. If kept chilled in an air tight container these should last up to a week.
Can I make these healthier?
Yes of course. I used white chocolate but a good quality dark chocolate could be used instead, dark chocolate has less sugar and fats than white chocolate. If you would still like the white effect then you could use a low fat natural yoghurt mixed with a bit of melted coconut oil. If you want a more flavoursome yoghurt, simply add a few drops of vanilla essence or white chocolate essence into the mix. Or you could leave the coating off all together and wrap the bars in liquorice laces and top with eyes. Let your creativity take over!
Recipe tips
As much as I LOVE this Lindt white chocolate I wouldn’t recommend it for decorating these bars. Unbeknownst to me at the time, this bar isn’t solid chocolate. When I checked back on the description it says ‘Irresistibly smooth. Swiss made. Highly meltable. White chocolate with a smooth melting filling’. Well it certainly melted super quick but took a long time to set. This particular bar had a sneaky layer of creamy, melts chocolate, maybe it was the trick within my treat! As these are meant to be quick to make I would try melting a solid chocolate bar down instead, save this for pure indulgence when on the sofa one evening.
