World Cup Fever 2018 is upon us!
Oh. My. Gosh. How exciting is this year’s tournament!
I remember years ago when the country would go mad for the World cup. Cars by the dozen would have England flags poking proudly out of them, supermarkets could barely keep up with the demand for beer and snacks and the best of all…. teachers would let you watch the England games in school time!!
WINNER!
The little village where I come from celebrated so well, there would be street parties and BBQs a plenty and pubs would be packed to the rafters with friends and family, plus they even handed out bowls of steaming hot beef chili, fluffy buttery jacket potatoes and hot golden chips tumbled into straw baskets, all for free!
This year I wasn’t so sure I was going to see such an electric atmosphere again, we didn’t even have a World Cup song, though I personally don’t think you can beat Baddeil and Skinner’s Three Lion’s song, cue the music:
‘It’s coming home, it’s coming home, football’s coming HOME’ …Ah you know how it goes but if not, (where have you been?!) check out the link above.
That was until last Tuesday! England won on penalties against Columbia!!!! Can you believe I am typing those words?!
‘England won on penalties’ AMAZING!
I happened to have Columbia in the works sweep-stake… Looks like I’ve lost that, but who cares, England are won! Woo-hoo!
But it didn’t end there, to top that off they went and got through to the semi-finals by beating Sweden!! My partner and I happen to work in an Anglo-Swedish company, a little bit awkward but hey-ho, we are through!! However, it was quite entertaining listening to the friendly banter going on in the teleconferences on Monday.
This definitely calls for a celebration! I’m already thinking of tonnes of party food and snack ideas to make to greedily devour whilst watching the match, even if you’re not a football fan there is always an excuse to indulge in some tasty treats.
My first idea is a no brainer, Oreo cheesecake balls. These are seriously delicious, super quick and fun too. Quite simply these are smushed up Oreo biscuits (or custard creams, whatever takes your fancy) bound with cream cheese, rolled into a ball and covered in sugar paste to which ever design you desire, I obviously went for a football theme (see if you can spot the gaffer). These are great for people of all ages and I’m pretty sure children would love making them… If they don’t eat them all in the process… Seriously it’s really hard not to devour the chocolatey, mushed up biscuit mix, so yummy!
If you’d like to try them check out the recipe below. In the meantime, I shall be thinking of what other goodies to make; sticky Guinness glazed wings, cheesy jalapeno poppers, crispy maple glazed bacon chips, refreshing mojito ice pops, garlic butter sausage subs, bourbon BBQ basted beef ribs… I’d better slow down, this could become quite a feast!
So England, is it coming home this time… we certainly hope so but whatever happens we shall be supporting you all the way! Good Luck X
Look how simple these are to make… Only a few ingredients:
Hardly any equipment needed
Combine ingredients
Roll and decorate
And there you go, enjoy!
DISCLAIMER
1. I can’t guarantee you will have any biscuit mix left to decorate – it is seriously moreish
2. Gareth Southgate is not this round in real life (Sorry Gareth!) but these are Oreo cheesecake balls, they have to be round! However, I think we got his tie pretty spot on!
